Management stages

Four phases of care

01

Arrival preparation

Set up a quiet resting area, secure fencing, and a consistent feeding spot before the dog arrives. Keep the first weeks calm so the dog can settle into its new routine.

02

Foundational training

Begin short obedience sessions built on clear cues and rewards. Consistent routines in handling, crate time, and recall give a shepherd the structure it relies on.

03

Nutrition schedules

Feed measured meals at fixed times, adjusting portions to age and activity level. Steady nutrition supports lean muscle and healthy growth through the developmental stages.

04

Adult conditioning

Balance daily walks and off-leash work with rest. Joint-conscious exercise, adjusted for age and terrain, helps protect the structure of a working adult dog over time.

Daily care pillars

Three areas to maintain every day

Joint management, drive fulfillment, and coat maintenance form the core of routine care for both breeds.

Pillar one

Joint management

Watch for stiffness after activity, keep weight in a healthy range, and choose surfaces and exercise intensity suited to the dog's age.

Pillar two

Drive fulfillment

Give daily mental work through scent games, tracking, and structured obedience. A bored shepherd often develops problems that a tired, engaged one does not.

Pillar three

Coat maintenance

Brush regularly, especially during seasonal shedding, and check skin and ears during each session. Routine grooming also gives you an easy chance to spot changes early.
